Admiral of the Fleet Sir David Benjamin Bathurst GCB, DL (born 27 May 1936) is a former Royal Navy flag officer who went on to become Commander-in-Chief, Fleet (1989–1991) then Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff (1991–1993) and finally First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff from (1993–1995).
Bathurst joined the Royal Navy in 1953. He then qualified as a Pilot in 1960. In 1964 he Helicopter Instructor; Fleet Air Arm appts incl. 2 years’ exchange with RAN, 723 and 725 Sqdns; Senior Pilot, 820 Naval Air Sqdn; CO 819 Naval Air Squadron; HMS Norfolk, 1971; In 1973 he was assigned to the Navy Department, Naval Staff until 1974. In 1975 he was appointed Commanding Officer frigate HMS Ariadne, In 1976 he was appointed Naval Assistant to First Sea Lord until 1977. In 1978 was next appointed Captain (F) of the 5th Frigate Squadron, and Commanding Officer of the Leander-class frigate HMS Minerva until 1980. In 1981 he attended a course at the Royal College of Defence Studies. In 1982 he was made Director of Naval Air Warfare until 1983.

In 1983 he was appointed Flag Officer, Second Flotilla until 1985. His next appointment was as Director-General, Naval Manpower and Training and post he held until 1986. He was then appointed Chief of Fleet Support in 1986. In 1989 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Fleet and additionally in his NATO role, Allied Commander-in-Chief, Channel, and Commander-in-Chief Eastern Atlantic Area until 1981. He moved then moved to the Ministry of Defence in London as Vice-Chief of Defence Staff until 1993. His final appointment was as First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff as head of HM Naval service until 1995.
