The Navy Department, Naval Staff[1] was the former senior command, operational planning, policy and strategy department established in April 1964. when the Admiralty Naval Staff as part of the Department of Admiralty was unified into the Ministry of Defence, where it became the Navy Department. It existed until 1997.

History

In April 1964 the Department of Admiralty along with the Air Ministry and War Office were unified into the Ministry of Defence. The Admiralty became a ministerial service department of the MOD called the Navy Department, at the same time the former Admiralty Naval Staff was became the Naval Staff (Navy Department). The Naval Staff advised and assisted the Admiralty Board and Navy Board in chief strategic and operational planning

In addition they are responsible for the distribution of fleets or formations, and the allocating of assets to major naval commands and stations. The Naval Staff were responsible for formulating official policy on tactical doctrine and requirements in regard to men and material. In order to deliver this the Naval Staff was organised into subsidiary specialist Directorates and Divisions, each of which were superintended by a member of the naval staff responsible for them.
