Rear-Admiral Matthew Peter Briers or Matt Briers (born 10 January 1966) is a senior Royal Navy flag officer who served as Commodore, Fleet Air Arm from 2014 to 2016. He currently serves as Director, Carrier Strike since January 2018.[1]

Naval Career

Briers joined the Royal Navy in 1984.[1] In 2006 he was appointed Commanding Officer, 845 Naval Air Squadron until 2008.[1] In 2011 he attended the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom to undertake the Higher Command and Staff Course (HCSC).[1] Following that course in 2011 he was the appointed Commanding Officer, Commando Helicopter Force (Royal Marines) until 2014.[1] His next appointment was Commodore, Fleet Air Arm which he held until 2016.[1] In January 2018 he was appointed Director, Carrier Strike in charge of the Ministry of Defence's Carrier Strike Capability Programme.[1]


Briers attended Torpoint Community School; then Saltash Sixth Form College before going onto; King’s College, London to gain an (MA Defence Studies in 2002).[1]
