The Hydrographic and Harbour Department of the Admiralty was established in 1856 following the merger of the Hydrographic Department with the Harbour Department. The department was responsible conducting surveying in order to produce nautical charts it was administered by the Hydrographer of the Navy. The department existed briefly until 1862 when its split up into individual departments once again.

History

In 1856, the Harbour Department's responsibilities for harbours were transferred to the Hydrographic Department, which became the Hydrographic and Harbour Department. The department was responsible conducting surveying in order to produce nautical charts it was administered by the Hydrographer of the Navy. The department existed briefly when under the Harbour Transfer Act of 1862, its functions were transferred to the Board of Trade on 1 January 1863.
