The Home Fleets were the unified home commands British Royal Navy from 31 July 1912 to December 1914.


On 31st July 1912 The Home Fleets were a new organisation of the Royal Navy's was instituted, unifying all home fleet level commands consisting of the (1st, 2nd and 3rd, Fleets) under a single command. The Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleets had direct command of the First Fleet; and a Vice-Admiral commanded the Second and Third Fleets.[1]

Each of the three fleets represented a different level of availability. The First Fleet was composed of ships in full commission; the Second Fleet of ships with 50% manning levels; and the Third Fleet with ships laid up in reserve under care and maintenance parties. Patrol Flotillas overseen by the Admiral of Patrols and Submarine Flotillas were established outside this organisation.[2]

On 8 August 1914 units of the Home Fleets were distributed in accordance with Admiralty Fleet Order the majority of elements formed the new Grand Fleet others were assigned to the following units: Channel Fleet, Northern Patrol-Cruiser Force B, 7th Cruiser Squadron-Cruiser Force, 11th Cruiser Squadron-Cruiser Force E, Dover Patrol, Harwich Flotillas, 7th Destroyer Flotilla, 8th Destroyer Flotilla, 9th Destroyer Flotilla, 5th Submarine Flotilla, 6th Submarine Flotilla, 7th Submarine Flotilla and the 8th Submarine Flotilla.[3]

The Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleets held the joint title of Commander-in-Chief, First Fleet from 1912 to 1914.
