The Department of Dockyards and Fleet Maintenance, and previously known as the Department of the Director of Dockyards was the British Admiralty, then later Navy Department, department responsible for administration of Royal Navy dockyards, the building of ships, the maintenance and repair of ships at dockyards and factories, and the supervision of all civil dockyard personnel. It existed from 1958 until 1964 when it was replaced by the Department of Dockyards and Maintenance.

History

From 1885 until 1957 responsibly for the management of Royal Navy Dockyards lay with the Department of the Director of Dockyards. in 1958 that department was replaced by the Department of Dockyards and Fleet Maintenance under the control of a Director-General of Dockyards and Maintenance until 1964. Following the merger of the Department of Admiralty into a new and much larger Ministry of Defence it came under the control of the Navy Department. In 1968 it was renamed as the Department of Dockyards and Maintenance.
