The Admiralty and Marine Affairs Office previously called the Admiralty Office (1414-1546) [1] was the government office of the Kingdom of England responsible for the control and direction of naval affairs and the Navy Royal's central command.
It was controlled and directed by the Minister for the Marine.[2]
History
The Admiralty and Marine Affairs Office was first established in 1546 when the former Admiralty Office was renamed. It was politically administered by the Lord Admiral of England until 1625. Civil an logistical administration from 1546 to 1625 lay with Council of the Marine, it was renamed Navy Board in 1576. After 1625 the office of the the Lord Admiral was put into commission and his responsibilities for formulating policy, distribution of the Royal Navy and judicial administration passed to an executive committee called the Board of Admiralty, that was controlled by the First Lord of the Admiralty. In 1707 this office was then elevated to a government department of state called the Admiralty or Admiralty Department,[3] at which point the first lord then became a permanent government minister and member of the English cabinet.
